As parents, and as professionals working with children, we all seek to see each child succeed and learn. We all are aware that every child is full of promise and potential. What is not always clear is how to help each child reach that potential. What makes one child succeed and another child struggle? Do we know?

NACD does know. We also know something extremely important about children: we know how to impact the brain’s ability to process information. We know how to improve a child’s cognitive function. We know how to produce global change in a child.

A child learns easily if the material being presented is appropriate for his or her processing level. Not too far above it, not below it: matched to it.

The presentation has intensity and frequency

A child learns easily if the presentation of the material has intensity and is presented frequently over time. That is what daily input at home delivers.

What we mean by global change

Global change means change that affects your child’s overall ability to learn, think, and function. Here is the difference:

Skill-Based Learning

Teach a child how to add…

…and the child can do addition problems. It is a skill that is taught and acquired, and it stops there. This is the typical approach of the mainstream educational system today.

Global Change

Teach a child to process at a higher level…

…as NACD does, and the child becomes able to think more complex thoughts, speak in more complex sentences, gather greater amounts of accurate information, and interact with their world in a more cognizant manner. Everything improves.

Now think of the possibilities of this approach. NACD is able to train a parent or professional in an array of strategies to improve a child’s cognitive function, enabling the child to learn all information faster and more accurately. In addition, NACD can train the parent or professional in how to instruct the child most efficiently.

Common questions from parents

Why would a typical child need NACD?

Because “typical” describes where your child is, not where they could be. Every child’s ability to process information can be developed, and a child who processes at a higher level learns everything faster, thinks more deeply, and functions better in every part of life. NACD gives you the strategies to make that happen.

Is this tutoring?

No. Tutoring teaches subjects; NACD develops the learner. Tutoring is skill-based: teach addition, get addition. NACD works on your child’s underlying processing so that all learning improves, in every subject, including the ones nobody is tutoring.

What is “processing,” exactly?

Processing is how your child’s brain takes in, holds, and works with information, particularly what they hear and see. It is the foundation under attention, language, reading, memory, and thinking. It is also developable, which is the heart of the NACD approach.

What does a program look like day to day?

Short, specific activities you run with your child at home, designed from their assessment and fitted to your family’s schedule. The key is frequency and intensity over time: small daily input compounds into big change.

Will it help my child’s school performance?

School performance rests on processing, memory, and attention, which is exactly what the program develops. A child who can hold more information and think with more complexity learns faster in every classroom, and NACD can also train you in how to instruct your child most efficiently at home.

What ages does this work for?

All of them. NACD provides assessments and individualized programs for children of all ages, at all levels of function, from babies through teens, and works with adults as well. The brain changes at every age.

My child is already doing well. Is there any point?

Doing well is a starting point, not a ceiling. Many NACD families come to us with children who are already succeeding and want to give them more: better processing, deeper thinking, faster learning. If your child is well ahead of the curve, the accelerated and gifted page is written for you.

How is NACD different from enrichment programs and apps?

Two things: individualization and frequency. Your child gets one integrated program built from their own assessment instead of a generic activity set, and it runs daily with you instead of whenever the app gets opened. You also get real staff who know your child and coach you throughout.

What happens at the first evaluation?

Your NACD Developmentalist works directly with your child and with you, mapping how your child processes auditory and visual information, memory, language, learning, and more. You leave with a clear picture of your child’s function and a program of activities with clear instructions.

How soon do families see progress?

Every child is different, and we do not make promises. What we can say is that input compounds day after day, and progress is measured concretely at follow-up evaluations three times a year, so you always know what is moving and what the program targets next.
