The Typical Child

Improving a Child’s Function

As parents—and as professionals working with children—we all seek to see each child succeed and learn. We all are aware that every child is full of promise and potential. What is not always clear is how to help each child reach that potential. What makes one child succeed and another child struggle? Do we know?

NACD does know. A child learns easily if the material being presented is appropriate for his or her processing level. A child learns easily if the presentation of the material has intensity and is presented frequently over time. We also know something extremely important about children. That is, we know how to impact the brain’s ability to process information. We know how to improve a child’s cognitive function. We know how to produce global change in a child.

What do we mean by global change? We mean change that affects the child’s overall ability to learn, think and function. If you teach a child how to add, the child can do addition problems. It is a skill that is taught and acquired. This is skill-based learning, which is the typical approach of the mainstream educational system today. However, if you teach a child how to process auditory information at a higher processing level, as NACD does, the child becomes able to think more complex thoughts, speak in more complex sentences, gather greater amounts of accurate information, and interact with you and others in his or her environment in a more cognizant manner. That’s global change. Now think of the possibilities of this approach. NACD is able to train a parent or professional in an array of strategies to improve a child’s cognitive function, enabling the child to learn all information faster and more accurately. In addition, NACD can train the parent or professional in how to instruct the child most efficiently.

In the past, professionals believed that it was impossible to impact a child’s cognitive function. We now know this is not true. If you could learn how to improve your child’s ability to think and learn, wouldn’t you do it? If your child could improve his or her ability to learn, talk, and explore their world, wouldn’t their lives be better for it? Welcome to that opportunity.

NACD provides neurodevelopmental assessments and individualized learning programs for children of all ages, at all levels of function. Along with training parents and educators in how to implement the programs, NACD provides ongoing staff support and periodic reassessments throughout the process. Come explore with us your child’s vast ability to learn about and understand themselves and the world around them.
